Ramdan begins around March 22 this year, and we’re giving away a free copy of this early-reader chapter book! First published in the fall of 2020, Sadiq and the Ramadan Gift by Siman Nuurali and Anjan Sarkar, shares the story of a group of boys planning an iftar — the Ramadan fast-breaking meal — to raise money. While Ramadan is best known for dawn-to-sunset fasting, it’s also a time for sadaqah — helping others in need. In Sadiq and the Ramadan Gift, the plan is to donate the money to an Islamic school in Somalia. Everyone is incredibly excited about the project — filming a video for the masjid’s website, making and printing flyers, and figuring out how they will handle the donations. But one friend, Zaza, is less than enthusiastic. As the day of the fund-raising iftar draws near, Sadiq finally figures out why Zaza is so upset. Zaza wants to raise money for a different cause, which means the friends have some of their own work to do first. The author, Siman Nuurali, grew up in a Somali family in Kenya, and now lives in Minnesota with her five children. The book includes a few facts about Somalia as well as a glossary of terms with pronunciations. The book has 5 easy-reader chapters and is geared to kids in 1st-3rd grade. It’s currently ranked #30 in Children’s Muslim Fiction on Amazon and has maintained a 4.9/5 rating. This book is a great way for kids (and their adults!) to learn about Ramadan, Somali-American culture, and how they might solve disagreements amongst themselves.
