Sikhism {SIK-ism} is another faith tradition that began in India — the Punjab region. Founded by Guru Nanak {GOO-roo NAH-nahk} around 1500CE, it is built on the teachings of 10 human Gurus and on their sacred text, which is considered their 11th (and final) Guru. There are over 25 million Sikhs worldwide, making it one of the larger religions in the world.
Sikhs are known for their commitment to peace, harmony, and equality for all people. One of their main practices is offering langars, the sharing of free food where everyone sits on the floor to eat a vegetarian meal. Culturally, Sikhs are also frequently associated with bhangra dancing, which is a popular Punjabi art form.
