ABOUT VICKI’S WRITING

I have been writing about religious traditions, faith-based holidays, interesting interfaith connections, and kid-friendly activities for many years.

I currently serve as the Editor for the Religion Matters blog. Before that, I served as an Editor, and then a Supervising Editor, for Multicultural Kid Blogs.

Of course, being a good editor means I need to keep up with my own writing! Below, you will find some links to my articles for those sites. I also wrote almost 40 articles for The Interfaith Observer! If you like to read, this page is for you!

RELIGION MATTERS

Religion Matters promotes religious literacy in both K-12 and higher education. The founder, Tim Hall, and I regularly work with public school educators, and our blog has highlighted all sorts of topics — like using film and art to teach about religion in the classroom, creating VR experiences of religious rituals, and exploring Islamic funerary rites with students.

My articles have also been fairly diverse and include:

  • Ramadan Book Recommendations for Kids in Schools
  • Hanukkah Book Recommendations for Kids in Schools
  • Diwali Book Recommendations for Kids in Schools
  • Teaching About Ramadan in K-5 Classrooms

MULTICULTURAL KIDS

Multicultural Kid Blogs inspires and supports families, educators and community members who lift up diversity in all its forms. The site often publishes craft ideas, kid-friendly recipes from around the world, and suggestions for children’s books that promote equity and inclusion.

My articles mostly focus on sharing religious holydays with kids. Several were part of their 10 Fun Facts Series:

  • 10 Fun Facts – Diwali
  • 10 Fun Facts – Obon
  • 10 Fun Facts – Passover
  • 10 Fun Facts – Sikhism
  • 10 Fun Facts – Sukkot
  • 10 Fun Facts – Vesak
  • 10 Fun Facts – Summer Solstice

Other holyday articles were more general:

  • Purim Activities for Kids
  • Sharing Krishna Janmashtami with Kids
  • Remembering Our Loved Ones
  • Honoring Native American Heritage Month with Kids
  • Winter Holidays Bring Light
  • And still others centered on some of my family’s travel adventures:

    • What My Family Really Learns from Family Vacations
    • 10 Fun Facts for Kids About Galapagos
    • 10 Fun Facts for Kids About Iceland

INTERFAITH OBSERVER

From 2014-19, I served as a Correspondent for The Interfaith Observer (TIO). This free, monthly, digital journal explored interreligious relations and the interfaith movement as a whole. Over the years, I contributed almost 40 articles, most of which covered the “kid beat.” Articles about interfaith education for kids include.

  • Re-Imagining Interfaith with Kids in Mind
  • Creation Myths for Kids
  • Meditation for Kids
  • Faith-Related Craft for Kids of All Ages
  • Helping Kids Connect with the Earth
  • Teaching Kids about the Divine Feminine
  • Sub-Saharan African Tales for Kids Around the World

Articles focusing on interesting organizations in the interfaith world include:
